Natural gas plays a critical role in campus heating and also supports some specialized building functions.

The University of Kentucky is delivered natural gas by Columbia Gas of Kentucky through an underground distribution system. Most of this is received directly by the heating plants that use it as a primary fuel source to produce High Pressure Steam. The remaining natural gas is delivered directly to individual buildings and used in other applications such as cooking, research and labs, and other minor applications.

Because the natural gas distribution infrastructure is entirely owned and operated by Columbia Gas of Kentucky, UEM’s involvement focuses on the safe and efficient utilization of the fuel within the utility plants and buildings.
