When is a permit required?

An Above Ceiling Work Permit is required before beginning any above-ceiling work that has the potential to impact fire or smoke barrier integrity, utility infrastructure, or life safety systems. This includes:

  • Any work that penetrates, breaches, or alters a fire-rated or smoke-rated wall, floor, or ceiling assembly
  • Installation, modification, or removal of utility systems above the ceiling or passing through rated barriers, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, medical gas, pneumatic tube, and data/communications systems
  • Any work on or near life safety systems such as fire sprinkler lines, fire dampers, smoke dampers, or fire alarm components
  • There is a decision matrix on the bottom of this page to help assist you in determining when a certification or permit are required.

If you are uncertain whether your scope of work requires a permit, contact Facilities Compliance before work begins. DO NOT assume a permit is not needed.
