The Above Ceiling Work Certification and Permit Program is UK HealthCare's formal system for managing and tracking all work performed above the ceilings in our facilities. Anyone who removes a ceiling tile or accesses the space above the ceiling grid regardless of the reason or duration is required to hold a valid Above Ceiling Work Certificate. For work that directly impacts utilities, life safety systems, or a fire/smoke rated barrier, an additional project-specific Above Ceiling Work Permit must be obtained and approved before work begins. Both the certificate and the permit are administered by the Facilities Compliance Department.
What is the difference between an Above Ceiling Work Certificate and a Permit?
Hospitals rely on a network of fire and smoke barriers walls, floors, and ceilings built to a specific fire-resistance rating to contain fire and smoke and protect patients who cannot self-evacuate. Every time someone works above a ceiling, there is potential for those barriers to be compromised: a penetration left unsealed, a junction box left uncovered, a cable draped across sprinkler piping. Above-ceiling deficiencies are among the most frequently cited findings during inspections by The Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and even a single unaddressed violation can place patients, staff, and the organization's survey standing at risk.
This program gives Facilities Compliance the visibility and oversight needed to stay ahead of compliance issues rather than react to them. By requiring certification before any ceiling tile is lifted and a permit before any barrier is touched, the program ensures that workers are trained to recognize and protect rated barriers, that every project impacting life safety infrastructure is documented, and that Facilities Compliance can verify conditions are left compliant after work is complete. The result is a facility that is safer for patients and better prepared for regulatory review at any time.
