Step 1 — Review the Responsible Person Requirements
Before beginning the training, read through the Responsible Person requirements listed on this page. Understanding these requirements is an important part of the certification process, as the Responsible Person is accountable for ensuring that all above-ceiling work on their project is performed safely, with valid certifications and approved permits in place. Make sure you understand whether this role applies to you before proceeding.
Step 2 — Watch the Training Video
Watch the Above Ceiling Work training video in full before taking the quiz. The video covers everything you need to know to work safely and compliantly above the ceilings in a UK HealthCare facility, including how to identify rated barriers, firestopping requirements, sprinkler pipe rules, electrical safety, ceiling tile requirements, and the permit process. You must complete the video before attempting the quiz.
Step 3 — Take the Training Quiz
Once you have completed the video, click the link to the right of the video to take the Above Ceiling Work certification quiz. You must score 80% or higher to pass. Upon successful completion, submit your results to Facilities Compliance as proof of training. Your certificate is valid for one year from the date of completion and must be renewed annually before it expires.
You must have the ACW certification sticker on your UK ID Badge to work above the ceilings. Once you pass the quiz, you can obtain this certification sticker from Facilities Compliance in room H18 on the ground floor of Chandler Hospital.
For larger projects involving multiple subcontractors or a sustained crew working within a defined area, Facilities Compliance recognizes that requiring every individual on site to hold a certification may not be practical. In these situations, a Responsible Person model applies: each subcontractor on the project may designate one or more certified individuals who serve as the responsible person for their trade, or the general contractor may designate a small number of certified individuals to serve as responsible persons for the entire site.
Regardless of how coverage is structured, at least one certified Responsible Person must be physically present on the work site at all times when above-ceiling work is actively occurring. The Responsible Person is accountable for ensuring that all work performed under their oversight complies with the requirements of this program — including barrier protection, firestopping, and permit conditions — and that no uncertified worker accesses above-ceiling spaces unsupervised.
The name and contact information for the on-site Responsible Person must be identified in the permit application and that individual must be reachable at all times during the permitted work period. If the designated Responsible Person leaves the site, a qualified replacement must be in place before above-ceiling work resumes.
At least one certified Responsible Person must be physically present on the work site at all times.
Complete the certification by taking a quiz on the training video content. You must receive an 80% or higher to pass.
