UEM delivers several utilities that can be classified into two categories: internally produced and regulated.
Internally Produced Utilities are produced within UEM’s utility plants by UEM staff and are provided directly to the University Community. These include High Pressure Steam, which is primarily used for heating; and Chilled Water, which is primarily used for cooling.
Regulated Utilities are provided by local utility companies whose rates are determined by the Public Service Commission. Domestic Water is provided and distributed by Kentucky American Water. Sanitary & Storm Water Sewers are provided by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. Natural Gas is distributed by Columbia Gas of Kentucky. Electricity is purchased from Kentucky Utilities, but most of the distribution to the buildings is maintained by UEM’s High Voltage team.
