In the event of winter weather, it becomes the Grounds Departments' mission to provide safe travel while on campus as effectively as possible. To report hazardous conditions, please contact by phone (859-257-2830) or email (snow@uky.edu).
It is the Grounds Departments' responsibility to provide access while on campus in the safest, most efficient and environmentally responsible manner possible. Grounds supervisors monitor weather conditions during normal working hours (6:00 AM – 5:00 PM). The UK Police Department monitors weather conditions from 5:00 PM – 6:00 AM 7 days a week and reports potential weather problems to the Facilities Delta Room. The Grounds Department uses this information, as well as weather forecasts to schedule appropriate staffing starting times in order to keep campus safe.
Grounds employees are assigned to specific areas at the start of weather events. In the event of severe weather, snow removal areas will be prioritized and staffed in the following order:
Building entrances, adjacent steps and walks from buildings to main walks are cleared and maintained by Building Operators and Custodial staff assigned to that building during normal working hours. Other units from the University assist in keeping areas immediately surrounding assigned buildings or other working areas safe and clear.
Normal Hours Reporting procedure (7:00 am - 4:30 pm):
If the Campus community encounters any hazardous conditions during normal working hours, please contact the Grounds Department directly by phone at (859) 257-3105 or through email via snow@uky.edu. There should be a Grounds employee available to take calls during normal hours. If for any reason we are unable to be reached by phone, please contact the Facilities Delta Room at (859) 257-2830; they will be able to reach Grounds supervisors via UKs 2-way radio network.
Off Hours, Weekends and Holidays:
If hazardous conditions are encountered outside of normal working hours, please contact the Delta room at (859) 257-2830. The Delta Room will discuss the local conditions with the Grounds Superintendent to develop the appropriate necessary actions.
